He was gone. And, just like when she lost him the first time, she hadn’t been able to at least help him or be by his side when it happened. The only thing she had left was her damn reflection. Every time she looked into the mirror she saw him. Seconds later after looking, the guilt, the sadness, the pain would all settle in and Jess’s knees would buckle. “It’d get easier,” they told her, “Some day it will.” But that wasn’t soon enough for her—she just wanted the ache to go away.
And it did, eventually, until she looked into the mirror again and broke down all over again.
